Mustard Seed and Leaven

31He put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a man took and planted in his field.
32Although it is the smallest of all seeds, yet it grows into the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches.”
33He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and mixed into three measures of flour, until all of it was leavened.”
34Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables. He did not tell them anything without using a parable.
35So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: “I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world.”

Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a mustard seed that a man sowed in his field. It is small, but it grows into a tree-like plant where birds can make nests. He then compares the kingdom to leaven that a woman hides in a large amount of flour until all of it is leavened.
Both pictures emphasize movement that begins quietly. Jesus does not describe the kingdom as impressive because it starts with size, wealth, or political force. He points to growth that becomes visible over time and to influence that works through an ordinary household task.
The mustard seed is not a promise that every small project will become famous. The leaven is not a command to make ourselves indispensable. Jesus is describing what God's kingdom is like: its beginning may look unimpressive, but its reach is God's work and its effect is larger than the first glimpse suggests.
The woman mixes leaven into three measures of flour until all of it is leavened. The seed becomes a plant large enough for birds to nest in. Both pictures move from an easily overlooked beginning to an effect much greater than its size suggests.
Matthew says Jesus’ parables fulfill the prophet’s words about opening His mouth in parables and uttering hidden things. Jesus is making the kingdom known through these familiar pictures; they ask hearers to trust God’s work beyond what its beginning appears to promise.
How We Know
Psalm 78 opens with a promise to speak in parables and pass on the LORD’s wonders to the next generation. Matthew quotes its opening as fulfilled in Jesus’ parables. The connection explains His manner of teaching; it does not require us to assign a hidden meaning to every ingredient or branch.
