Magi from the East

1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,
2asking, “Where is the One who has been born King of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.”
3When King Herod heard this, he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.
4And when he had assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ was to be born.
5“In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:
6‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of My people Israel.’”
7Then Herod called the Magi secretly and learned from them the exact time the star had appeared.
8And sending them to Bethlehem, he said: “Go and search carefully for the Child, and when you find Him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship Him.”
9After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stood over the place where the Child was.
10When they saw the star, they rejoiced with great delight.
11On coming to the house, they saw the Child with His mother Mary, and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.
12And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they withdrew to their country by another route.

Magi arrive from the east with a question: where is the One born King of the Jews? They have seen His star and come to worship Him. Matthew does not say there are three visitors or call them kings. Their importance in this account is their search for Jesus.
Herod is disturbed, and Jerusalem with him. He gathers the chief priests and scribes and asks where the Christ will be born. They answer from Scripture: Bethlehem in Judea. The promised ruler will shepherd God’s people Israel.
Herod then meets the Magi secretly to learn when the star appeared. He sends them to Bethlehem and asks for a report, claiming that he too wants to worship the child. The next passage will expose his murderous purpose. Here, his words of worship conceal a threat.
After leaving the king, the Magi see the star go ahead of them and stand over the place where the child is. They rejoice greatly. Entering the house, they find Jesus with Mary, fall down and worship Him. They open their treasures and give gold, frankincense and myrrh.
God warns them in a dream not to return to Herod, so they go home by another route. Their visit brings real worship to Jesus and ends in obedience to God’s warning. Herod has access to the same scriptural answer about Bethlehem, but uses it for a very different purpose. Knowing where the Christ is to be found is not the same as welcoming His rule.
How We Know
Micah 5 names Bethlehem as the place from which Israel’s ruler will come and describes Him shepherding His flock in the LORD’s strength. Matthew records the chief priests and scribes using the prophet’s words to answer Herod. Bethlehem and the shepherd-ruler belong to the passage’s explanation of who Jesus is; the Magi’s search is directed toward Israel’s promised Christ.

What This Means for Us
The Magi come to worship Jesus Himself. Herod hears about the promised ruler and tries to use that knowledge to protect his own position. Information about Jesus can leave our loyalties unchanged.
As you read Scripture, ask what you are learning about the Lord you worship. Is there a command you keep admiring without obeying it? Respond to Him in that particular matter, trusting that His rule is worthy of more than respectful words.
Prayer
Father, lead us to Jesus with the humility of the Magi. Give us wisdom to recognize deception, courage to leave harmful paths, and obedience that makes our worship visible in the way we protect and serve others. Amen.
