The Son of Man Appears

29Immediately after the tribulation of those days: ‘The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.’
30At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
31And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.
32Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its branches become tender and sprout leaves, you know that summer is near.
33So also, when you see all these things, you will know that He is near, right at the door.
34Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have happened.
35Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.

Jesus describes what follows the tribulation: a darkened sun, a moon no longer shining, falling stars and the shaking of heavenly powers. The Son of Man’s sign appears in heaven, bringing mourning among all the earth’s tribes.
They will see Him coming on the clouds with power and great glory. He sends His angels with a loud trumpet call to gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.
Jesus gives a lesson from the fig tree. When its branch becomes tender and puts out leaves, people know that summer is near. In the same way, when the disciples see the things Jesus has described, they are to recognize that he is near, at the very gates.
Jesus says that this generation will not pass away until all these things take place, and that heaven and earth will pass away but his words will not pass away. The scene is cosmic, but its anchor is the reliability of Jesus' promise.
These verses should not be turned into a chart for confident date-setting. They give hope that history is not abandoned and that Christ's return will gather his people openly. Let the certainty of his word produce steadiness, not speculation.
How We Know
Isaiah uses the darkening of sun, moon and stars in an announcement of judgment. Daniel sees one like a son of man coming with the clouds and receiving everlasting dominion. Jesus brings this prophetic language into His description of the Son of Man’s glory and the gathering of His people.

What This Means for Us
The image of the Son of Man gathering his elect is meant to strengthen hope. God's people are not forgotten in the confusion of history, and Jesus' return will not depend on a secret message available only to a select interpreter.
Jesus' words outlast heaven and earth. That does not mean every prediction made in his name is reliable. It means our confidence rests in what he actually said, not in elaborate timelines or dramatic claims that have to be revised whenever events disappoint them.
His promise to gather His elect reaches every direction. Believers who are scattered, isolated or beyond our ability to contact are not beyond His reach. Remember them in prayer with the confidence that the Lord knows how to gather His own.

Lord Jesus, keep our hope fixed on your return and your trustworthy word. Guard us from speculation, gather those who suffer, and make us faithful in the work you have given us today. Amen.
