Matthew 4:1-11
Tested in the Wilderness

1Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
2After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry.
3The tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
4But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
5Then the devil took Him to the holy city and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple.
6“If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You, and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”
7Jesus replied, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
8Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
9“All this I will give You,” he said, “if You will fall down and worship me.”
10“Away from Me, Satan!” Jesus told him. “For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’”
11Then the devil left Him, and angels came and ministered to Him.

The Spirit leads Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, Jesus is hungry. The devil begins by questioning his identity as the Son of God and urges him to turn stones into bread. Jesus answers from Deuteronomy that people do not live by bread alone, but by every word from God.
The devil then takes Jesus to the temple and urges him to throw himself down, misusing Scripture to demand a spectacular rescue. Jesus answers that we must not put the Lord to the test. Finally, the devil offers the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worship. Jesus commands Satan to leave and cites Scripture’s command to worship and serve God alone.
The temptations are not simply three bad ideas that most people can avoid. They press on hunger, identity, visibility, and power. Jesus will feed crowds, perform signs, and receive the nations, but he will do these things in the Father's way rather than seize them from the devil.
Matthew does not say that hunger is sinful or that using ability to meet a need is always wrong. The issue is whether Jesus will use his sonship independently of the Father's will. Nor does the temple scene condemn every request for help. It rejects forcing God to prove himself through reckless spectacle.
The devil leaves, and angels come to minister to Jesus. He has refused to turn the Father’s care into a test or exchange worship for power. The Son remains faithful under temptation, trusting the Word He has repeatedly cited.
How We Know
Jesus answers each temptation from Deuteronomy. Chapter 8 recalls Israel’s hunger and God’s provision of manna; chapter 6 commands exclusive service to the LORD and forbids testing Him. These words were given to Israel in its wilderness history. Jesus, the Son, obeys them under His own wilderness testing. Even Satan’s use of a psalm does not turn disobedience into trust.

What This Means for Us
Jesus is more than an example of someone with strong willpower. Hebrews 4 says our high priest was tempted yet remained without sin, and invites us to come to Him for mercy and help. We need His faithfulness when our own resolve fails.
Bring a particular temptation to Him before hiding or excusing it. Read the relevant command in Scripture and take the step that helps you obey it, such as leaving an opportunity to deceive or asking someone trustworthy for support. A verse about God’s care never requires us to manufacture danger to prove our faith.

Lord Jesus, You remained faithful under temptation. Have mercy on us in our weakness and give us help to obey. Keep us from testing Your care or trading faithfulness for comfort, attention or power. Amen.
