I Will Look to the LORD

Micah begins chapter seven with the feeling of searching after the harvest and finding nothing. He is like someone gathering summer fruit at the gleaning of a vineyard, but there is no cluster and no early fig to crave.

The image becomes a diagnosis of the society. The godly man has perished from the earth, and no one is upright. People lie in wait for blood and hunt one another with a net. Those with influence know how to do evil together: the prince and judge demand a bribe, and everyone conspires around the influential person's desire.

Even the best are like a brier, and the most upright are sharper than a hedge of thorns. The day of the watchmen and visitation has come, and confusion is now at hand. Micah is not saying every individual is equally guilty. He is describing a culture in which uprightness is scarce and even apparent goodness can wound.

The breakdown reaches the household. Do not rely on a friend or trust a companion. Guard your words even with the person who lies in your arms. A son dishonors his father, a daughter rises against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. A person's enemies are members of the household.

Jesus later uses family division language when He explains that His mission will not always produce immediate peace inside a household. Micah's point is not that family members are naturally enemies or that suspicion is a virtue. It is that public corruption can enter private relationships until trust is damaged at every level.

Then Micah gives his response.

But as for me, I will look to the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me.

Micah does not claim that the society is healthy. He waits with open eyes. Looking to the LORD is not denial of betrayal; it is a decision about where to place hope when human trust has collapsed.
