I Thank My God Every Time

3I thank my God every time I remember you.
4In every prayer for all of you, I always pray with joy,
5because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,
6being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
7It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart. For in my chains and in my defense and confirmation of the gospel, you are all partners in grace with me.
8God is my witness how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.
9And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,
10so that you may be able to test and prove what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,
11filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Remembering the Philippians moves Paul to thank God. He prays for them with joy because they have shared in the gospel from the first day until now. Their partnership has continued through his imprisonment and his work defending the gospel.
Paul's confidence rests in God: the One who began a good work in them will carry it to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Their continuing faith and generosity give him reason for joy, and he trusts the Lord who brought that life into being to sustain it.
This is a warm, personal prayer. Paul holds them in his heart and calls God as witness to his longing for them with the affection of Christ Jesus. Their shared work has drawn them into real love for one another.
He asks that their love may grow in knowledge and insight. Love needs discernment to recognize what is best. Paul wants them to be pure and blameless for Christ's day, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ. As their lives bear that fruit, God receives glory and praise.
God's faithful work gives Paul confidence to pray for their further growth. He can both rejoice in what God has begun and ask for the love, understanding and obedience still needed.
How We Know
The partnership mentioned in Philippians 1:5 has specific examples later in the letter. In 4:15–18, Paul recalls repeated support while he was in Thessalonica and thanks them for the gift delivered by Epaphroditus. What This Means for Us
