Psalm 1:1-6
Two Ways to Walk
1Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, or set foot on the path of sinners, or sit in the seat of mockers.
2But his delight is in the Law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night.
3He is like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding its fruit in season, whose leaf does not wither, and who prospers in all he does.
4Not so the wicked! For they are like chaff driven off by the wind.
5Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6For the LORD guards the path of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

This short psalm opens the collection by asking what kind of company and counsel will shape a life. The blessed person does not walk with the wicked, stand in the way of sinners, or sit among mockers. The movement suggests a gradual settling in: first listening, then lingering, then belonging.
The alternative is delight in the Law of the LORD. This is not a picture of reluctant rule-keeping. The faithful person returns to God's instruction day and night because it gives the life its direction. The tree planted beside streams bears fruit in season; it is nourished, patient, and not dependent on favorable weather every day.
The wicked are compared with chaff driven by the wind. The contrast is about rootedness. One life receives nourishment and becomes fruitful; the other has no lasting weight. The LORD knows the way of the righteous, while the way of the wicked perishes. “Knows” here carries the warmth of watchful regard, not mere information.
