Psalm 108:1-13
My Heart Is Steadfast

1A song. A Psalm of David. My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make music with all my being.
2Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn.
3I will praise You, O LORD, among the nations; I will sing Your praises among the peoples.
4For Your loving devotion extends beyond the heavens, and Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
5Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; may Your glory cover all the earth.
6Respond and save us with Your right hand, that Your beloved may be delivered.
7God has spoken from His sanctuary: “I will triumph! I will parcel out Shechem and apportion the Valley of Succoth.
8Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine; Ephraim is My helmet, Judah is My scepter.
9Moab is My washbasin; upon Edom I toss My sandal; over Philistia I shout in triumph.”
10Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom?
11Have You not rejected us, O God? Will You no longer march out, O God, with our armies?
12Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.
13With God we will perform with valor, and He will trample our enemies.

David begins with a steadfast heart. He will sing with harp and lyre, awaken the dawn, and praise God among the nations. God's loving devotion reaches beyond the heavens. Before describing the help he needs, David asks that God's glory be seen over all the earth.
Then he prays for God to save His beloved people. God has spoken from His sanctuary: Shechem, Succoth, Gilead, and Manasseh belong to Him. Judah is His scepter. Even the neighboring nations that threaten Israel are under His authority. Their armies cannot overturn His claim.
That word matters because David still faces a hard question: who will lead him into Edom? God has rejected them and has not gone out with their armies. David asks Him to help again, knowing human strength cannot deliver them. The psalm ends confidently: with God they will act with valor, and He will trample their enemies.
David can praise while he still needs rescue. His confidence rests on the God who has spoken, and his prayer asks that same God to act.

What This Means for Us

Israel's promised victory does not guarantee success for every plan we make. It does teach us to depend on God instead of treating prayer as a last resort after our own strength runs out.
Prayer
God, steady hearts that face uncertain days. Let praise come before dawn, make Your loving devotion known through us, and provide the help human strength cannot give. Amen.
