The Keeper of Israel

1A song of ascents. I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?

2My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.

3He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector will not slumber.

4Behold, the Protector of Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

5The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is the shade on your right hand.

6The sun will not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.

7The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve your soul.

8The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.

The traveler lifts his eyes to the hills and asks where help will come from. His help comes from the LORD, Maker of heaven and earth. The One who made the hills is able to watch over the person walking among them.

The LORD will not let the traveler's foot slip and will neither slumber nor sleep. He is keeper of Israel, shade at the right hand, protection from sun by day and moon by night. The language gives assurance of constant attention.

The LORD will guard him from all evil, preserve his soul, and watch over his coming and going now and forever. These promises reach beyond a single journey. In John 10, Jesus assures His sheep that He gives them eternal life and no one can snatch them out of His hand. Trouble and death cannot undo His care for those who belong to Him.

What This Means for Us

We need sleep, and we cannot keep watch over everyone we love. God does not share that limitation. When you lie awake worrying about someone, bring that person to Him. You can rest without first making the world safe by your own vigilance.

This psalm gives us words to pray when someone leaves home or faces an uncertain journey. Ask for protection, and entrust their coming and going to the Keeper who never sleeps.

Prayer

Keeper of Israel, guard people beginning difficult journeys. Give safe companions and wise precautions, and hold their coming and going in Your attentive care. Amen.
