Psalm 46:1-11
God Is Our Refuge

1For the choirmaster. Of the sons of Korah. According to Alamoth. A song. God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble.
2Therefore we will not fear, though the earth is transformed and the mountains are toppled into the depths of the seas,
3though their waters roar and foam and the mountains quake in the surge. Selah
4There is a river whose streams delight the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5God is within her; she will not be moved. God will help her when morning dawns.
6Nations rage, kingdoms crumble; the earth melts when He lifts His voice.
7The LORD of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
8Come, see the works of the LORD, who brings devastation upon the earth.
9He makes wars to cease throughout the earth; He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the shields in the fire.
10“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted over the earth.”
11The LORD of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

God is a refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. The psalm imagines the earth giving way, mountains falling into the sea, and waters roaring. The point is not that believers will never face catastrophe. It is that even when the world feels physically unstable, God remains present.
A river brings joy to the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, so she will not fall. Nations rage and kingdoms fall when He raises His voice. The contrast is between turbulent human powers and the stable presence of God among His people.
The singers invite us to see God’s works: He brings devastation, ends wars, breaks bows and spears, and burns shields. Against that scene God commands, “Be still and know that I am God.” He will be exalted among the nations and over the earth. His voice calls human power to recognize who truly rules. The repeated confession—The LORD of Hosts is with us—makes presence the answer to fear.

What This Means for Us
When news of war or disaster frightens us, this psalm gives us more than a command to feel calm. The LORD who is with His people rules over the forces they cannot master. Pray for those in danger, asking Him to protect them and bring violence to an end.
“The God of Jacob is our fortress” is a confession the community repeats together. Read it aloud as a family when you need courage. God’s presence gives us reason to help others and face the day, even when events remain beyond our control.
Prayer
God of refuge, stay near when the ground beneath us feels unstable. Quiet the demand to control everything, give us wise action and genuine rest, and make Your presence our courage. Amen.
