Psalm 54:1-7
Save Me by Your Name
1For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments. A Maskil of David. When the Ziphites went to Saul and said, “Is David not hiding among us?” Save me, O God, by Your name, and vindicate me by Your might!
2Hear my prayer, O God; listen to the words of my mouth.
3For strangers rise up against me, and ruthless men seek my life—men with no regard for God. Selah
4Surely God is my helper; the Lord is the sustainer of my soul.
5He will reward my enemies with evil. In Your faithfulness, destroy them.
6Freely I will sacrifice to You; I will praise Your name, O LORD, for it is good.
7For He has delivered me from every trouble, and my eyes have looked in triumph on my foes.

David asks God to save him by His name and vindicate him by His might. Strangers rise against him and ruthless men seek his life; they do not keep God before them. The danger is both personal and moral because the pursuers believe power is enough.
David says God is his helper and sustains his soul. He asks God to repay the enemy's evil and cut them off in faithfulness. This is a prayer that places judgment before God instead of turning David into an avenger.
The ending looks forward to a freewill offering and praise. David will give thanks because God has delivered him from every trouble and allowed him to see his enemies' defeat. Gratitude follows rescue, but it does not pretend the threat was imaginary.

God of power and mercy, protect people pursued by ruthless harm. Sustain their souls, judge evil faithfully, and teach us to answer deliverance with honest gratitude rather than pride. Amen.
