My Soul Waits in Silence
Read the passage
1For the choirmaster. According to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. In God alone my soul finds rest; my salvation comes from Him.
2He alone is my rock and my salvation. He is my fortress; I will never be shaken.
3How long will you threaten a man? Will all of you throw him down like a leaning wall or a tottering fence?
4They fully intend to cast him down from his lofty perch; they delight in lies; with their mouths they bless, but inwardly they curse. Selah
5Rest in God alone, O my soul, for my hope comes from Him.
6He alone is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress; I will not be shaken.
7My salvation and my honor rest on God, my strong rock; my refuge is in God.
8Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts before Him. God is our refuge. Selah
9Lowborn men are but a vapor; the exalted are but a lie. Weighed on the scale, they go up; together they are but a vapor.
10Place no trust in extortion or false hope in stolen goods. If your riches increase, do not set your heart upon them.
11God has spoken once; I have heard this twice: that power belongs to God,
12and loving devotion to You, O Lord. For You will repay each man according to his deeds.

David’s soul finds rest in God alone; his salvation comes from Him. God is his rock and fortress, so David declares that he will not be shaken. Enemies seek to topple him like a leaning wall, blessing with their mouths while cursing in their hearts.
David calls his own soul to rest in God, then invites the people to trust Him at all times and pour out their hearts before Him. Even people who seem important are only a vapor on the scales. Their status cannot give the security that belongs to God.
David warns against trusting oppression or setting the heart on stolen goods. Wealth grows, but it should not become the center. Power belongs to God, and loving devotion belongs to Him too. God repays each person according to his work.

What This Means for Us
David tells us to pour out our hearts before the God in whom we find rest. That invitation includes the thoughts we have trouble putting into words. Bring Him the fear, disappointment, or hope you have been carrying through the day.
If wealth increases, David says not to set our hearts on it. Enjoy what God provides without allowing a larger income or someone’s approval to become the reason you feel secure. Power and loving devotion belong together in the Lord we trust.
Prayer
Rock and salvation, receive the hearts we pour out before You. Keep us from trusting wealth or control, expose false speech, and teach us to wait quietly in Your strength. Amen.
