Hidden Schemes

Read the passage

1For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. Hear, O God, my voice of complaint; preserve my life from dread of the enemy.

2Hide me from the scheming of the wicked, from the mob of workers of iniquity,

3who sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their bitter words like arrows,

4ambushing the innocent in seclusion, shooting suddenly, without fear.

5They hold fast to their evil purpose; they speak of hiding their snares. “Who will see them?” they say.

6They devise injustice and say, “We have perfected a secret plan.” For the inner man and the heart are mysterious.

7But God will shoot them with arrows; suddenly they will be wounded.

8They will be made to stumble, their own tongues turned against them. All who see will shake their heads.

9Then all mankind will fear and proclaim the work of God; so they will ponder what He has done.

10Let the righteous rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in Him; let all the upright in heart exult.

David asks God to hear his complaint and preserve his life from dread of the enemy. The wicked sharpen their tongues like swords and aim bitter words like arrows. They attack innocent people from hiding and encourage each other in their secret plans. They think no one will see.

But God turns the attack around. His arrows strike them suddenly, and their own tongues bring them down. The people who see it shake their heads. A plot that seemed secure in secrecy meets the judgment of the God from whom nothing is hidden.

The outcome reaches beyond David’s relief. People fear God, proclaim His work, and ponder what He has done. The righteous are invited to rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in Him. Their safety and praise rest in His action against the hidden harm.

What This Means for Us

Rumor can wound someone who has no chance to answer. Before repeating an accusation, stop and ask whether you know it is true and whether passing it on will help. Make room for the person being discussed to be heard.

When secretive words have harmed us, this psalm gives us a complaint to bring to God. We can seek truthful help without needing to devise a hidden attack of our own. God sees the whole situation, including what we cannot prove.

Prayer

Protect people from hidden schemes and bitter speech. Expose what needs to be brought into the light, keep our tongues from becoming weapons, and make Your refuge a safe place for the wrongly accused. Amen.
