Psalm 82:1-8
Defend the Weak
1A Psalm of Asaph. God presides in the divine assembly; He renders judgment among the gods:
2“How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Selah
3Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; uphold the rights of the afflicted and oppressed.
4Rescue the weak and needy; save them from the hand of the wicked.
5They do not know or understand; they wander in the darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
6I have said, ‘You are gods; you are all sons of the Most High.’
7But like mortals you will die, and like rulers you will fall.”
8Arise, O God, judge the earth, for all the nations are Your inheritance.

God presides in the divine assembly and judges among the gods. The rulers are challenged: how long will they judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Their authority has failed because it protects the powerful instead of the people who need justice.
They are commanded to defend the weak and fatherless, uphold the cause of the poor and oppressed, rescue the weak and needy, and deliver them from the hand of the wicked. The reason is simple: the vulnerable cannot secure justice without help.
The rulers are called gods and sons of the Most High, yet they will die like men and fall like every other ruler. The psalm ends with a request for God to rise and judge the earth, because all nations belong to Him.

Prayer
Righteous Judge, confront authorities who protect the wicked and neglect the weak. Give the vulnerable advocates, make our judgments fair, and remind every leader that power answers to You. Amen.
