Let Us Go to the Countryside
11Come, my beloved, let us go to the countryside; let us spend the night among the wildflowers.
12Let us go early to the vineyards to see if the vine has budded, if the blossom has opened, if the pomegranates are in bloom—there I will give you my love.
13The mandrakes send forth a fragrance, and at our door is every delicacy, new as well as old, that I have treasured up for you, my beloved.

The woman now gives the invitation. She asks her beloved to go with her to the countryside and spend the night among the wildflowers. The request is not a demand for a grand setting. It is a desire to share time away from the noise and eyes of the city.
She wants to go early to the vineyards and see what has happened there. Has the vine budded? Has the blossom opened? Are the pomegranates in bloom? The questions are practical, but they are not cold. The couple's love is woven into the work of noticing a garden. She intends to give him her love there, in a place where growth can be observed and welcomed.
The mandrakes send out a fragrance, and at their door is every delicacy, new and old, treasured up for him. The woman has not arrived empty-handed. She has gathered what can be shared and kept it ready. Desire is expressed through hospitality as well as through words.
The scene is quiet compared with the extravagant descriptions around it. There is a path to the countryside, a vineyard that may or may not be blooming, a fragrance in the field, and food at the door. Love does not need to be constantly dramatic to be real. It can be present in an early walk and a prepared meal.
The woman's voice also has initiative. She is not waiting to be summoned or praised. She proposes a place, a time, and a shared purpose. The relationship is strengthened by two people who can both invite and respond.
