Four Horns and Four Craftsmen

Zechariah looks up and sees four horns. He asks the angel what they are and learns that they are the horns that scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem. The vision does not leave the scattering as an unexplained tragedy. It names the powers that lifted themselves against God's people.

Then the LORD shows Zechariah four craftsmen. He asks what they have come to do. The answer is that the craftsmen have come to terrify and throw down the horns of the nations that raised their power against Judah and scattered it.

The vision is compact, but its movement is clear. The horns represent oppressive strength; the craftsmen represent the forces God sends against that strength. We are not told the craftsmen's names, tools, or historical timetable. The point given by the angel is enough: powers that made people unable to raise their heads will themselves be brought down.

This is not a license for the people of God to become a new set of horns. The vision does not command Judah to invent its own revenge. It gives judgment to God and assures the scattered that the powers which seemed untouchable are not beyond His reach.

The two images belong together. Fear can make an empire look permanent, while God's vision places that empire beside a craftsman's work. Human strength can scatter a community, but it cannot dictate the final outcome. The people can wait for God's justice without pretending that oppression is harmless.
