A Fountain Opened for Cleansing
1“On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the people of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity.
2And on that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, I will erase the names of the idols from the land, and they will no longer be remembered. I will also remove the prophets and the spirit of impurity from the land.
3And if anyone still prophesies, his father and mother who bore him will say to him, ‘You shall not remain alive, because you have spoken falsely in the name of the LORD.’ When he prophesies, his father and mother who bore him will pierce him through.
4And on that day every prophet who prophesies will be ashamed of his vision, and he will not put on a hairy cloak in order to deceive.
5He will say, ‘I am not a prophet; I work the land, for I was purchased as a servant in my youth.’
6If someone asks him, ‘What are these wounds on your chest?’ he will answer, ‘These are the wounds I received in the house of my friends.’
7Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, against the man who is My Companion, declares the LORD of Hosts. Strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn My hand against the little ones.
8And in all the land, declares the LORD, two-thirds will be cut off and perish, but a third will be left in it.
9This third I will bring through the fire; I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on My name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are My people,’ and they will say, ‘The LORD is our God.’”

“On that day” a fountain will be opened for the house of David and the people of Jerusalem to cleanse them from sin and impurity. The image answers the mourning of the previous chapter with a source of cleansing. The people do not wash themselves by pretending they were never guilty. God opens the fountain.
The LORD will erase the names of idols from the land so they will no longer be remembered. He will remove the prophets and the spirit of impurity. The restoration is not only forgiveness for past acts. It removes the systems and voices that kept drawing the people back into deception.
If anyone continues to prophesy falsely, even the father and mother who bore that person will reject the false speech. The language is severe and belongs to the judgment scene. It does not authorize modern families to harm or kill people who disagree. It pictures a community that has become so committed to truth that false prophecy can no longer hide behind family loyalty.
Prophets will be ashamed of visions used to deceive and will no longer dress in a hairy cloak to create a false impression. When asked about wounds on the chest, one will claim they were received in the house of friends. The details are not fully explained, but the larger movement is clear: deception is exposed and the false prophet loses the costume that made the lie look holy.
Then the LORD calls for the sword against His Shepherd, His Companion. The Shepherd is struck and the sheep scatter. Two-thirds are cut off and perish, while a third is brought through fire and refined like silver and tested like gold. The remnant calls on the LORD, He answers, and they belong to one another in a renewed confession.
The passage moves through cleansing, truth, judgment, loss, and refinement. The final result is not a community that boasts it has never failed. It is a people who call on the LORD and hear Him answer.
How We Know
Zechariah joins a fountain opened for cleansing with the striking command, “Strike the shepherd,” after which the sheep are scattered and a refined remnant remains. Jesus quotes that shepherd image on the night of His arrest, saying that the disciples' scattering fulfills what is written. The Gospel connection identifies Jesus with the struck shepherd and shows that the suffering, scattering, and later refining belong to the prophetic shape of God's saving work.
