Zechariah 7:8-14
Administer True Justice
8Then the word of the LORD came to Zechariah, saying,
9“This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Administer true justice. Show loving devotion and compassion to one another.
10Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. And do not plot evil in your hearts against one another.’
11But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder; they stopped up their ears from hearing.
12They made their hearts like flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the LORD of Hosts had sent by His Spirit through the earlier prophets. Therefore great anger came from the LORD of Hosts.
13And just as I had called and they would not listen, so when they called I would not listen, says the LORD of Hosts.
14But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations that they had not known, and the land was left desolate behind them so that no one could come or go. Thus they turned the pleasant land into a desolation.”

The LORD's answer becomes direct. He tells the people to judge honestly and show loving devotion and compassion to one another. Justice is not presented as a technical system without a heart. Loving devotion and compassion belong with sound judgments.
The vulnerable are named: widows, the fatherless, foreigners, and the poor. The people must not oppress them or plot evil in their hearts against one another. The list makes the command concrete. A community cannot claim to honor God while using its strength against people with less protection.
But the people refused to pay attention. They turned a stubborn shoulder and stopped their ears from hearing. The images show deliberate resistance. They are not confused about what God wants. They are choosing not to face it.
Their hearts become like flint, and they will not listen to the law or the words sent through the earlier prophets by the LORD's Spirit. Great anger comes from the LORD. He called, and they would not listen; when they call, He will not listen. The reversal is a judgment on a relationship the people have repeatedly refused.
The LORD scatters them with a whirlwind among nations they did not know. The pleasant land becomes desolate, with no one coming or going. The empty land is the public result of private and communal refusal. The people wanted worship without justice, but their refusal made the whole place unlivable.

Notice who has the least voice in a decision your family is making. Let that person's needs affect the choice, and reject any plan that depends on another person's vulnerability staying invisible.
Prayer
God of true justice, soften the places where we have stopped listening. Protect the vulnerable, expose our selfish plans, and make compassion and sound judgment ordinary in our homes. Amen.
