Love Never Ends
8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be restrained; where there is knowledge, it will be dismissed.
9For we know in part and we prophesy in part,
10but when the perfect comes, the partial passes away.
11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I set aside childish ways.
12Now we see but a dim reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
13And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love; but the greatest of these is love.

Paul says love never fails or ends. Prophecies will cease, tongues will be stilled, and knowledge will pass away. He is not saying truth is unimportant. He is contrasting gifts that serve the church for a time with love, which belongs to God's lasting future.
Our knowledge and prophecy are partial. When the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. Paul does not explain every detail of “the perfect,” so we should not use the phrase to make confident claims about a timetable. The clear point is that our present understanding is incomplete and will not remain the final form of what God gives.
Paul compares present maturity to a child speaking, thinking, and reasoning, and to seeing a dim reflection in a mirror. Then we will see face to face and know fully, even as we are fully known. The image creates humility: believers truly know God, but they do not possess exhaustive knowledge now.
Faith, hope, and love remain, but the greatest is love. Faith trusts God's promise, hope reaches toward His future, and love begins to live that future among people now. Love is greatest because it reflects God's own character and does not become obsolete when other gifts have completed their work.
A family can live with honest limits. We can make real decisions without pretending to see every consequence, and we can disagree without making partial understanding into a weapon. Love gives incomplete knowledge a humane shape.
