1 Corinthians

49 devotions across 16 chapters, covering 437 verses.

First Corinthians is Paul's long, direct letter to a church full of gifts, questions, conflict, and spiritual ambition. He begins by thanking God for the grace given to the Corinthians, yet he quickly addresses their divisions. The church is not made whole by loyalty to a favorite teacher. It belongs to Jesus Christ, whose cross overturns the world's ideas of power and wisdom.

Paul moves from the cross to the church's life together. Pride has made the Corinthians childish, competitive, and tolerant of serious sin. He addresses lawsuits, sexual immorality, marriage, singleness, food offered to idols, and the way freedom affects a brother or sister with a sensitive conscience. His repeated concern is that knowledge and rights must be governed by love.

The middle of the letter turns to worship. Paul corrects disorder around the Lord's Supper, explains that the Spirit gives different gifts for the common good, and places those gifts inside the picture of one body with many members. Love is not a decorative chapter between teaching about gifts. It is the way every gift is meant to be used.

Paul then calls the church to pursue what builds people up, especially when discussing prophecy, tongues, and gathered worship. Some details belong to the Corinthian setting and require humility when applied elsewhere. The clear principle is that worship should honor God, communicate truth, protect the vulnerable, and strengthen the church rather than display spiritual status.

The letter reaches its great climax in the resurrection. Jesus truly died for sins, was buried, was raised, and appeared to witnesses. Because Christ has been raised, the dead will be raised, the present body will be transformed, and faithful labor is not empty. First Corinthians closes with generosity, alertness, courage, love, and the assurance that the Lord's work is never wasted.
