Walk in the Light

The message the writer heard from Jesus is that God is light and has no darkness at all. This statement describes God's holiness and truth. It leaves no place for treating evil as a harmless part of fellowship with Him.

If someone claims fellowship with God while walking in darkness, the claim is false. The issue is not that a Christian never stumbles. The issue is choosing darkness while claiming that the choice has no conflict with God.

The letter then gives a promise. If believers walk in the light, they have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus cleanses them from all sin. Walking in light includes honest relationships and dependence on Christ's cleansing.

The writer rejects another false claim: that we have no sin. Such a claim deceives us and makes God's truth absent from us. The faithful response is confession. God is faithful and just to forgive sins and cleanse from unrighteousness.

The final warning is equally direct. Anyone who says he has not sinned makes God out to be a liar, and God's word is not in him. The letter does not protect a person's self-image at the cost of truth.

Jesus says that people who practice evil avoid the light because it exposes their deeds, while those who practice truth come into the light. Proverbs says the person who confesses and renounces sin finds mercy. 1 John places confession inside fellowship rather than treating it as a reason to flee from God.

Families can make confession safe without making sin small. A child should learn that hiding wrong is dangerous, that telling the truth is a step toward repair, and that forgiveness is grounded in God's character rather than in pretending nothing happened.
