1 John 2:18-27
Hold Fast to What You Heard
18Children, it is the last hour; and just as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. This is how we know it is the last hour.
19They went out from us, but they did not belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. But their departure made it clear that none of them belonged to us.
20You, however, have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.
21I have not written to you because you lack knowledge of the truth, but because you have it, and because no lie comes from the truth.
22Who is the liar, if it is not the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, who denies the Father and the Son.
23Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father, but whoever confesses the Son has the Father as well.
24As for you, let what you have heard from the beginning remain in you. If it does, you will also remain in the Son and in the Father.
25And this is the promise that He Himself made to us: eternal life.
26I have written these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.
27And as for you, the anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But just as His true and genuine anointing teaches you about all things, so remain in Him as you have been taught.

The writer says it is the last hour and that the readers have heard an antichrist is coming. Many antichrists have already appeared, which shows that the last hour is underway. The term identifies opposition to Christ, not a puzzle for constructing a sensational timeline.
Some opponents went out from the Christian community, but their departure revealed that they did not belong to it. The writer is not saying every person who leaves a congregation is false. He is describing people who abandoned the apostolic confession and showed that their earlier participation did not represent genuine belonging.
The readers have an anointing from the Holy One and know the truth. The writer is not flattering them as though they need no instruction from anyone. He is assuring them that they possess the Holy Spirit's work and the apostolic truth needed to recognize a lie.
The liar denies that Jesus is the Christ and separates the Son from the Father. Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; whoever confesses the Son has the Father as well. The center of the test is not charisma, secret knowledge, or prediction. It is the identity of Jesus.
The readers are told to let what they heard from the beginning remain in them. The promise is that they will remain in the Son and the Father and receive eternal life. The anointing remains and teaches them to remain in Christ.
Jesus warned that false christs and false prophets would arise. In John 14, He promised the Spirit would teach and remind His disciples of what He had said. 1 John joins discernment to remaining: spiritual confidence is not independence from the received gospel.
Families can discuss spiritual claims without panic. Test them by their confession about Jesus, their agreement with apostolic teaching, and their fruit. A loud claim to private authority is not stronger than the truth heard from the beginning.
How We Know
Matthew 24:23-25 warns that false christs and false prophets will arise and deceive many. John 14:25-26 promises that the Holy Spirit will teach and remind Jesus' disciples of His words. 1 John identifies denial of Jesus as the Christ as the central lie and calls believers to remain in the received truth.
