Remain in Him

The writer says, “And now, little children, remain in Christ.” The command comes after the warning about deceivers and the promise of the anointing. Remaining means continuing in the truth about Jesus rather than being carried away by a new claim.

The purpose is confidence and freedom from shame when Christ appears at His coming. The letter does not use the future appearance of Jesus to create panic. It asks believers to live now in a way that will not make them hide from Him later.

The writer then gives another test. If we know that Jesus is righteous, we know that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of Him. Righteous practice does not earn new birth. It is evidence that God's life is at work.

Jesus compares His disciples to branches that must remain in the vine. Fruit comes from continuing connection to Him. Peter also calls believers to live holy and godly lives while waiting for the day of the Lord and the new heavens and earth.

The future appearing of Christ gives present choices weight. A child does not need to imagine every detail of the end times to understand the call. Stay close to Jesus, tell the truth, and practice righteousness.

Remaining is not passive. It includes returning after failure, rejecting deception, receiving instruction, and letting Christ's life show up in conduct. It also includes hope: Christ's coming will reveal what is true and will not shame those who belong to Him.

Families can talk about future hope without using fear as a control method. The goal is not to produce frightened performance. It is to help people become the kind of household that would be glad to welcome Jesus.
