Sons of the Light

1Now about the times and seasons, brothers, we do not need to write to you.
2For you are fully aware that the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
3While people are saying, “Peace and security,” destruction will come upon them suddenly, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
4But you, brothers, are not in the darkness so that this day should overtake you like a thief.
5For you are all sons of the light and sons of the day; we do not belong to the night or to the darkness.
6So then, let us not sleep as the others do, but let us remain awake and sober.
7For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.
8But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and the helmet of our hope of salvation.
9For God has not appointed us to suffer wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
10He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with Him.
11Therefore encourage and build one another up, just as you are already doing.

Paul says the Thessalonians do not need to be written to about times and seasons. They already know that the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. The image emphasizes surprise, not a hidden code that careful readers can use to calculate a date.
People will be saying “Peace and security” when destruction comes suddenly, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. The warning is aimed at false confidence. The image of labor emphasizes that judgment will arrive and cannot be escaped by assurances that all is well.
Then he turns to the church: they are not in darkness so that the day should overtake them like a thief. They are sons of the light and sons of the day. They do not belong to night or darkness.
Paul's application is wakefulness and sobriety. Since they belong to the day, they should be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love and the helmet of hope of salvation. The armor pictures what protects them as they wait: trust in God, love for others and confidence in the salvation He gives.
The reason for hope is that God has not appointed them to suffer wrath but to obtain salvation through Jesus Christ. Jesus died so that whether believers are alive or have died when He comes, they may live together with Him. The language does not promise that Christians avoid every kind of suffering. The letter has already said they will face trials. It promises that God's judgment is not the final destiny of those who belong to Christ.
The closing command returns to community: encourage and build one another up, just as they are already doing. Readiness takes the form of sober faithfulness and care for one another, grounded in Christ's saving death.
How We Know
Matthew 24:36–44 records Jesus teaching that the time of His coming is unknown and using the picture of a thief to call for watchfulness. First Thessalonians uses the same picture and draws the same practical conclusion: remain ready. The connection supports this emphasis without supplying a date or a timetable.
