One God and One Mediator
1First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for everyone—
2for kings and all those in authority—so that we may lead tranquil and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity.
3This is good and pleasing in the sight of God our Savior,
4who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
5For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
6who gave Himself as a ransom for all—the testimony that was given at just the right time.
7For this reason I was appointed as a preacher, an apostle, and a faithful and true teacher of the Gentiles. I am telling the truth; I am not lying about anything.

Paul urges that petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for everyone—for kings and all those in authority in particular. The church is not to pray only for friends who share its convictions. It is to bring the people who govern into prayer, even when their decisions are frustrating or unjust.
The purpose is that believers may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity. Paul is not asking the church to flatter rulers or pretend that public power is always benevolent. Prayer places rulers under God's authority and asks for conditions in which people can live faithfully.
Paul grounds the prayer in God's saving character. He is not a tribal deity with a narrow constituency; His desire reaches every kind of person and moves toward knowledge of the truth. The church's confidence rests on one God and one mediator, Jesus the human representative who offered Himself for all.
Paul says this testimony was given at its proper time, and he was appointed a herald and apostle—a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. The gospel's scope explains why the prayers' scope is so wide. The church cannot pray as though God's concern stops at its own boundaries.

What This Means for Us
Praying for authorities keeps anger from becoming our only public posture, but it does not require silence about injustice. We can ask God to restrain evil, guide leaders, protect the vulnerable, and make our own conduct dignified and faithful.
The one mediator also levels the room. No politician, pastor, parent, or spiritual celebrity can take Christ's place between people and God. We pray for everyone because everyone stands in need of the same Savior.
