1 Timothy

16 devotions across 6 chapters, covering 113 verses.

First Timothy is presented as a letter from Paul to Timothy, his true son in the faith. Timothy is serving in Ephesus, where the church needs help distinguishing the gospel from teachings that produce speculation, pride, and quarrels. Paul writes about doctrine because what a church believes eventually becomes visible in how its people pray, lead, spend money, and treat the vulnerable.

The letter begins with a warning about teachers who want to be experts in the law without understanding its purpose. Paul does not oppose sound instruction; he wants the law used rightly and the gospel protected from people who add burdens to grace. He remembers his own violent past and says Christ's mercy made him an example of God's patience, not a trophy for human achievement.

Paul then gives instructions for prayer and for the character of overseers and deacons. Leadership is not presented as a platform for the gifted. It is tested in the home, in reputation, in self-control, in hospitality, and in the ability to serve without being ruled by money or pride. The church is God's household, and its leaders must make that household trustworthy.

Some of the letter's instructions address men and women in worship, widows, elders, servants, and masters within the first-century world. These passages deserve careful reading. They must not be used to silence abuse, excuse exploitation, or grant authority to people whose conduct contradicts the gospel. Paul repeatedly brings responsibility, character, care, and accountability into the discussion.

The closing chapters call Timothy to train for godliness, set an example, care for God's family, flee the love of money, pursue righteousness, and guard the deposit entrusted to him. First Timothy is not a manual for building a powerful institution. It is a pastoral letter asking a church to make the gospel credible through truth, prayer, holiness, generosity, and patient care.
