Serving as Deacons
8Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued or given to much wine or greedy for money.
9They must hold to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.
10Additionally, they must first be tested. Then, if they are above reproach, let them serve as deacons.
11In the same way, the women must be dignified, not slanderers, but temperate and faithful in all things.
12A deacon must be the husband of but one wife, a good manager of his children and of his own household.
13For those who have served well as deacons acquire for themselves a high standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

Paul turns to deacons, who also must be worthy of respect. They must be sincere, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. A deacon's words, appetites, and relationship with money are relevant because service creates opportunities for trust and for harm.
They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. Christian service is not a substitute for conviction. A person may be busy and useful while inwardly divided. Paul wants servants whose conduct and belief can stand together.
They should first be tested, and then, if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons. The test is not a demand for sinless perfection or a popularity contest. It is time and observation sufficient to reveal whether the person is dependable and teachable.
Paul also addresses the wives, or women, associated with this ministry, depending on how the term is understood. They too must be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers, temperate, and trustworthy in everything. The text places character at the center of service for everyone involved.
Deacons must be husbands of one wife and manage their children and households well. Those who serve well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus. Faithful service may be unseen, but it is not insignificant before God.
