1 Timothy 4:11-16
A Life Worth Following
11Command and teach these things.
12Let no one despise your youth, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
13Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, and to teaching.
14Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given you through the prophecy spoken over you at the laying on of the hands of the elders.
15Be diligent in these matters and absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all.
16Pay close attention to your life and to your teaching. Persevere in these things, for by so doing you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

Paul tells Timothy to command and teach these things. The responsibility is serious, but Timothy's youth may make others dismiss him. Paul does not tell him to imitate age or force respect. He tells him to set an example for the believers in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.
Until Paul comes, Timothy is to devote himself to the public reading of Scripture, exhortation, and teaching. The church's life is nourished by hearing the word, being encouraged, and learning what it means. None of those tasks is a performance designed to make the teacher look impressive.
Timothy must not neglect the gift given him through prophecy when the elders laid their hands on him. He is to be diligent in these matters and give himself wholly to them so that his progress may be evident to everyone. Growth is expected to become visible over time.
Paul tells him to pay close attention to his life and doctrine, persevering in them. By doing so, Timothy will save both himself and his hearers. This is not a claim that Timothy earns salvation for others. It is a warning that a teacher's life and teaching can either lead people toward the truth or place them in danger.
