2 Corinthians 11:5-15
False Apostles
5I consider myself in no way inferior to those “super-apostles.”
6Although I am not a polished speaker, I am certainly not lacking in knowledge. We have made this clear to you in every way possible.
7Was it a sin for me to humble myself in order to exalt you, because I preached the gospel of God to you free of charge?
8I robbed other churches by accepting their support in order to serve you.
9And when I was with you and in need, I was not a burden to anyone; for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied my needs. I have refrained from being a burden to you in any way, and I will continue to do so.
10As surely as the truth of Christ is in me, this boasting of mine will not be silenced in the regions of Achaia.
11Why? Because I do not love you? God knows I do!
12But I will keep on doing what I am doing, in order to undercut those who want an opportunity to be regarded as our equals in the things of which they boast.
13For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ.
14And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.
15It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their actions.

Paul says he considers himself inferior to no one, even though he is not a polished speaker. His lack of rhetorical polish does not mean he lacks knowledge. The Corinthians have seen the truth of his ministry in many ways.
Paul asks whether it was wrong to humble himself by preaching the gospel free of charge. Other churches supported him while he served Corinth, and when he was in need, brothers from Macedonia supplied what he lacked. He has deliberately refused to become a financial burden to the Corinthians.
His motive is not lack of love. God knows that Paul loves them. He continues this practice to undercut people who want to present themselves as Paul's equals while boasting about their own status. Paul is not saying that every minister must refuse support. He is explaining why he chose this course in this contested relationship.
Then he exposes the men he is answering. They are false apostles and deceitful workers who disguise themselves as apostles of Christ. Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light, so a bright appearance proves nothing. Their end will correspond to their actions. Spiritual language and impressive presentation cannot turn exploitation into righteousness.

Presentation is not proof of character. Whether a speaker is charming, confident, or surrounded by religious vocabulary, examine what the person teaches and how that person treats people with less power.
Healthy ministry may receive support openly, but it must not exploit the people it serves. Ask whether money, admiration, and access are being handled with honesty and whether leaders can be questioned without retaliation.
Prayer
God of truth, protect us from spiritual deception and impressive appearances without integrity. Make us discerning, generous toward faithful servants, and unwilling to excuse exploitation because it wears religious clothing. Amen.
