The letter opens with the elder addressing a chosen lady and her children. It does not settle every question about these people, and it does not need to. Its first concern is the truth that abides in those who know it, and the love that is shared in that truth. Grace, mercy, and peace come from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father.
The middle of the letter joins walking in truth to walking in love. Love is not left as a word without direction. It means walking according to the Father's commandments, especially the command to love one another. Then the tone becomes firm. Deceivers are identified by their refusal to confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh, and the household is told not to welcome teaching that does not remain in Christ's teaching.
The closing turns toward face-to-face speech, because the elder hopes that joy will be complete. A final greeting comes from the children of an elect sister. 2 John is brief, but its path is clear: truth and love belong together, Christ's teaching must be guarded, and fellowship is a gift to seek with joy.
