The LORD Rewards Faithfulness

21The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness; He has repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands.
22For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not wickedly departed from my God.
23For all His ordinances are before me; I have not disregarded His statutes.
24And I have been blameless before Him and kept myself from iniquity.
25So the LORD has repaid me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in His sight.
26To the faithful You show Yourself faithful, to the blameless You show Yourself blameless;
27to the pure You show Yourself pure, but to the crooked You show Yourself shrewd.
28You save an afflicted people, but Your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down.
29For You, O LORD, are my lamp; the LORD lights up my darkness.
30For in You I can charge an army; with my God I can scale a wall.
31As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.
32For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God?

David says the LORD dealt with him according to his righteousness and the cleanness of his hands. He describes keeping the ways of the LORD, not turning wickedly from God, and keeping God's rules before him.
The song says God shows Himself faithful to the faithful, blameless to the blameless, pure to the pure, and shrewd to the crooked. He saves an afflicted people and brings down the haughty. David calls the LORD his lamp, the One who lights his darkness.
With God, David can charge an army and scale a wall. God’s way is perfect, His word is flawless, and He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him. The section ends by asking who is God except the LORD and who is a rock except God.
David appeals to the LORD who sees his conduct and knows whether he has followed His ways. We should take that appeal seriously without turning it into a claim that David never sinned. This same book records his confession to Nathan and the LORD’s forgiveness (2 Samuel 12:13). The song’s praise of God’s faithfulness does not erase that account.
The lines about God meeting people according to their posture should make us examine our own posture, not give us a weapon for judging the suffering. An afflicted person is not automatically crooked, and a successful person is not automatically pure. Ask where pride is shaping your household, then take refuge in God's word with humility.
