An Unashamed Workman

14Remind the believers of these things, charging them before God to avoid quarreling over words, which succeeds only in leading the listeners to ruin.
15Make every effort to present yourself approved to God, an unashamed workman who accurately handles the word of truth.
16But avoid irreverent, empty chatter, which will only lead to more ungodliness,
17and the talk of such men will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,
18who have deviated from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already occurred, and they undermine the faith of some.
19Nevertheless, God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord must turn away from iniquity.”

Paul warns Timothy that quarrels over words can ruin the people listening. He is not asking him to stop caring about truth. Timothy must work hard to handle God's word accurately and seek God's approval in doing so.
Empty, irreverent talk spreads ungodliness. Paul compares the teaching of Hymenaeus and Philetus to gangrene because it spreads harm. They say the resurrection has already happened, undermining the faith of others. This is more than a minor disagreement about dates: it takes away the future resurrection hope the gospel gives believers.
Yet the damage does not overthrow God's foundation. The Lord knows those who belong to Him. False teachers cannot make His people unknown to Him or overturn His saving purpose.
The seal on that foundation also calls everyone who names the Lord to turn away from wrongdoing. Assurance and obedience belong together. Timothy must neither panic as though God's work has collapsed nor dismiss the danger of false teaching and sin. He is to teach carefully, refuse destructive quarrels and live faithfully before God.
How We Know
The seal echoes the account of Korah's rebellion. In Numbers 16:5 Moses says the Lord will reveal who belongs to Him; in verse 26 he tells the people to move away from the wicked men's tents. Second Timothy similarly joins God's knowledge of His people with a call to separate from wrongdoing.
