The Word of God Is Not Chained

8Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David, as proclaimed by my gospel,
9for which I suffer to the extent of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God cannot be chained!
10For this reason I endure all things for the sake of the elect, so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.
11This is a trustworthy saying: If we died with Him, we will also live with Him;
12if we endure, we will also reign with Him; if we deny Him, He will also deny us;
13if we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.

Paul tells Timothy to remember Jesus Christ: risen from the dead and descended from David. The gospel proclaims the risen Savior who fulfills God's royal promise. Paul's imprisonment does not change who Jesus is or what God has done through Him.
Paul is chained like a criminal for preaching this message, but God's word cannot be chained. He endures for the sake of God's chosen people so that they may obtain salvation in Christ and eternal glory. God's saving purpose gives meaning to costly service; it does not make preaching or endurance unnecessary.
The trustworthy saying that follows joins promises with a warning. Those who have died with Christ will live with Him, and those who endure will reign with Him. But those who deny Him will be denied. Belonging to Christ calls for perseverance rather than treating allegiance to Him as disposable.
The final line says that Christ remains faithful even when we are faithless, because He cannot deny Himself. His character does not change with ours. That steadiness supports His promises and His warning; it does not erase the preceding words about denial. Timothy can trust Christ completely while taking seriously the call to remain with Him.
