Daniel Seeks Mercy

14When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, went out to execute the wise men of Babylon, Daniel responded with discretion and tact.
15“Why is the decree from the king so harsh?” he asked. Then Arioch explained the situation to Daniel.
16So Daniel went in and asked the king to give him some time, so that he could give him the interpretation.
17Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
18urging them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and his friends would not be killed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
19During the night, the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision, and he blessed the God of heaven
20and declared: “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and power belong to Him.
21He changes the times and seasons; He removes kings and establishes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.
22He reveals the deep and hidden things; He knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with Him.
23To You, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, because You have given me wisdom and power. And now You have made known to me what we have requested, for You have made known to us the dream of the king.”

Daniel speaks with prudence and discretion to Arioch, the captain of the king's guard, who has gone out to kill the wise men. Daniel asks for an appointment with the king and then tells his friends to seek mercy from the God of heaven.
The mystery is revealed to Daniel in a vision of the night. Daniel blesses the God of heaven, saying that wisdom and might belong to God, who changes times and seasons, removes kings, sets up kings, gives wisdom, and reveals deep and hidden things.
Daniel thanks God for making known the matter asked of the king. The answer does not lead him to boast that he is wiser than everyone else. He begins with worship and gives the credit to God.
Daniel's prudence protects the wise men before he knows the answer, and his first response after receiving the mystery is worship. He names God's authority over seasons and kings, which keeps the revelation from becoming a reason for personal fame. The hidden thing is disclosed as mercy, not as proof that Daniel has earned a superior position.
The passage gives a picture of knowledge held responsibly. Daniel acts decisively when lives are at stake, yet he gives the credit to God and remembers that rulers remain changeable.
