The Kingdom Is Weighed

25Now this is the inscription that was written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN.
26And this is the interpretation of the message: MENE means that God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end.
27TEKEL means that you have been weighed on the scales and found deficient.
28PERES means that your kingdom has been divided and given over to the Medes and Persians.”
29Then Belshazzar gave the command, and they clothed Daniel in purple, placed a gold chain around his neck, and proclaimed him the third highest ruler in the kingdom.
30That very night Belshazzar king of the Chaldeans was slain,
31and Darius the Mede received the kingdom at the age of sixty-two.

The writing on the wall says, “Mene, Mene, Tekel, and Parsin.” Daniel explains that Mene means God has numbered the days of Belshazzar's kingdom and brought it to an end.
Tekel means the king has been weighed in the balances and found wanting. Peres means the kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians. The words are short, but they answer the king's whole posture toward power.
Belshazzar commands that Daniel be clothed in purple, given a gold chain, and proclaimed third ruler. That same night Belshazzar is killed, and Darius the Mede receives the kingdom.
The writing is brief because the verdict does not need a long defense. Mene names a kingdom whose days have been counted; Tekel weighs a ruler and finds him wanting; Peres announces division and transfer. Belshazzar can still issue honors, but the ceremony no longer changes what has already been decided.
