Two Are Better Than One
9Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.
10For if one falls down, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to help him up!
11Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone?
12And though one may be overpowered, two can resist. Moreover, a cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
13Better is a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to take a warning.
14For the youth has come from the prison to the kingship, though he was born poor in his own kingdom.
15I saw that all who lived and walked under the sun followed this second one, the youth who succeeded the king.
16There is no limit to all the people who were before them. Yet the successor will not be celebrated by those who come even later. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

After describing the misery of isolation, the Teacher says two are better than one. They receive a good return for their work, and if one falls, the other can lift him up. The passage values companionship because life contains weakness, cold nights, danger, and failure.
Two people lying down can keep warm. One person may be overpowered, while two can resist. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. The image is about shared strength, not a promise that a group will never suffer.
The Teacher then gives an example from public life: a poor but wise youth is better than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to take a warning. The youth may come from prison to kingship, and people may follow him. Yet a later generation may fail to remember the successor too.
The point is not that every young person is wise or every older leader is foolish. It is that status and popularity are unstable. A leader who refuses correction is weaker than a person who receives wise help, even if the leader has more honor.
Genesis says it is not good for a person to be alone and presents companionship as part of God's good creation. Jesus sends His disciples out in pairs, giving them shared work and mutual support. Ecclesiastes teaches that interdependence is not a defect.
Families can practice this by making help ordinary. Ask for assistance before a crisis, share burdens, and teach children to lift someone who has fallen rather than mock the weakness.
No relationship removes every hardship. Companionship gives people a way to endure hardship without carrying it alone.

Genesis 2:18-24 presents companionship as part of God's good creation. Mark 6:7-13 records Jesus sending the disciples out in pairs. Ecclesiastes values shared work, rescue, warmth, resistance, and correction over isolated strength.
