Stand Firm in Freedom

Paul declares that Christ has set us free for freedom. The sentence sounds repetitive because the freedom is being threatened. The Galatians must stand firm and refuse to be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

Paul focuses on circumcision because it had become a test of whether Gentile believers truly belonged. If they receive circumcision as the basis of their standing, Christ will be of no value to them. Paul is not condemning Jewish believers for the practice or erasing its history. He is rejecting the demand that Gentiles add it as a requirement for justification.

He warns that anyone who accepts that basis is obligated to keep the whole law and has been cut off from Christ. The issue is not one body practice considered in isolation. It is choosing law-based righteousness instead of waiting by faith for the hope of righteousness.

In Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any power. What counts is faith expressing itself through love. The Galatians were running well, but someone had hindered them from obeying the truth. A little yeast works through the whole batch, so Paul trusts that the Lord will keep them from embracing the disturbance.

Paul says that if he still preached circumcision, the offense of the cross would have been removed. He wishes those who unsettle the church would go further and remove themselves. His language is severe because a message that makes Christ's cross insufficient is not a harmless supplement.
