Lights for Days and Seasons
14And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to distinguish between the day and the night, and let them be signs to mark the seasons and days and years.
15And let them serve as lights in the expanse of the sky to shine upon the earth.” And it was so.
16God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night. And He made the stars as well.
17God set these lights in the expanse of the sky to shine upon the earth,
18to preside over the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
19And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.
20And God said, “Let the waters teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the sky.”
21So God created the great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters teemed according to their kinds, and every winged bird after its kind. And God saw that it was good.
22Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters of the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”
23And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.
24And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, land crawlers, and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so.
25God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that crawls upon the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

God speaks again, and lights appear in the expanse of the sky. They separate day from night and mark signs, seasons, days, and years. The sun and moon are not named as gods or treated as powers that rule over God. They are lights God makes and appoints for the world he is preparing.
The greater light governs the day and the lesser light governs the night, and God also makes the stars. He sets them in the expanse of the heavens to shine on the earth, to govern day and night, and to separate light from darkness. The same God who brought light into being now gives it a rhythm that helps living things know time.
The waters then teem with living creatures, and birds fly across the sky. God sees that they are good and blesses them, telling them to be fruitful and multiply. The blessing is given to creatures before any human being appears. Life is not valuable only when it is useful to people; God attends to the creatures he has made.
The earth brings forth livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind. God sees that these too are good. Genesis gives us a world filled with variety before it gives us a human task. The animals are not disposable scenery. They belong to the goodness God is making.
This portion of the creation account teaches that time, light, stars, sea life, birds, and land animals have their place because God gives them one. Faithful readers may differ about how to understand the creation days, but the text is clear about the Creator and the goodness of what he creates.
