Genesis 1:26-31
Made in God's Image
26Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.”
27So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
28God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth.”
29Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit contains seed. They will be yours for food.
30And to every beast of the earth and every bird of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth—everything that has the breath of life in it—I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.
31And God looked upon all that He had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

The creation account reaches human beings with a deliberate announcement. God says, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness.” People are not described as an accident inside the world or as divine beings who own it. They are creatures made to reflect their Creator.
God gives human beings responsibility over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the livestock, and the creatures that move on the ground. This authority is a trust inside God's good creation. It cannot mean permission to treat the world as an object for careless use, because the same chapter keeps saying that what God has made is good.
Genesis says God created mankind in his own image, male and female. Both are included in the statement about bearing God's image. The text does not give one sex a lesser share of human dignity. Both receive God's blessing and the work of fruitfulness and stewardship.
God gives plants and trees for food to the people and gives green plants to the animals. He looks over everything he has made and calls it very good. The human calling is therefore placed inside dependence. People are responsible for the world, but they are not its source. They receive life, food, and purpose from God.
This passage gives families a firm place to stand when questions about creation become complicated. It clearly teaches God as Creator, the goodness of creation, the image of God in male and female, and human responsibility. It does not require us to settle every question about the age or mechanism of the creation days before we can obey what it plainly says.
