Trust Through Generations
17By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac on the altar. He who had received the promises was ready to offer his one and only son,
18even though God had said to him, “Through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.”
19Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and in a sense, he did receive Isaac back from death.
20By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning the future.
21By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.
22By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites and gave instructions about his bones.

Abraham was tested when he offered Isaac. He had received God's promises through Isaac, yet he was ready to offer his only son. The writer does not make the test sentimental or easy. Abraham trusted that God could raise the dead, and in a figurative sense he received Isaac back from death.
The faith chapter then moves quickly through Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning the future. Jacob blessed Joseph's sons as he was dying and worshiped while leaning on his staff. Their faith looked toward what God would do beyond their own remaining years.
Joseph, near the end of his life, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites and gave instructions about his bones. He lived and died inside a promise he would not see fulfilled in person. His hope was attached to God's future action rather than to the length of his own life.
The writer is not saying that faith gives parents control over their children's future. He is showing generations receiving, guarding, and passing on confidence in God's promise. Each person acts within a story larger than one lifetime.
