Run with Endurance
1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race set out for us.
2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3Consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

After naming a long line of faithful people, the writer pictures believers surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. The image is meant to strengthen the runners, not to turn the faithful dead into objects of worship. Their lives testify that trust in God can endure an unseen future.
The runners are told to throw off every encumbrance and the sin that easily entangles. Not every weight is a sin, but some habits, fears, ambitions, and loyalties make obedience harder. The writer calls the church to notice what keeps it from moving freely toward God.
The race has already been set out. Believers do not invent their own destination or compete for a place beside other runners. They run steadily by fixing their eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith.
