Pursue Peace and Holiness
14Pursue peace with everyone, as well as holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.
15See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God, and that no root of bitterness springs up to cause trouble and defile many.
16See to it that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his birthright.
17For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected. He could find no ground for repentance, though he sought the blessing with tears.

The writer gives the church a practical direction: pursue peace with everyone and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord. Peace is not passive avoidance. It is something the community actively seeks while refusing to separate peace from a life that belongs to God.
The church must also see to it that no one falls short of God's grace. Grace is not scarce, and the warning is not a demand to earn it. The community watches for people who are becoming isolated from the mercy God provides.
A root of bitterness can spring up and cause trouble and defile many. Bitterness rarely stays private when it is cultivated. It can spread through a household or church, turning old injuries into permission for new harm.
The writer warns against sexual immorality and godlessness like Esau, who sold his birthright for one meal. Later he wanted the blessing and was rejected, finding no opportunity to reverse what he had treated as disposable.
