Do Not Drift Away
1We must pay closer attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.
2For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every transgression and disobedience received its just punishment,
3how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? This salvation was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,
4and was affirmed by God through signs, wonders, various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to His will.

Because the Son is so great, the writer says we must pay closer attention to what we have heard. The image is of a boat slowly moving away from its place. Drifting does not require a dramatic decision. It can happen through inattention, gradual compromise, or allowing other voices to become more compelling than the gospel.
The writer compares the message spoken through angels with the salvation announced by the Lord. If disobedience under that earlier message received just punishment, neglecting the great salvation announced by Jesus is even more serious. The question is not only, “What do we believe?” It is also, “What are we doing with what we have heard?”
