Hebrews 8:1-6

A Better Covenant

1The point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,

2and who ministers in the sanctuary and true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by man.

3And since every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices, it was necessary for this One also to have something to offer.

4Now if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are already priests who offer gifts according to the law.

5The place where they serve is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”

6Now, however, Jesus has received a much more excellent ministry, just as the covenant He mediates is better and is founded on better promises.

Berean Standard Bible

The writer says the main point is that believers have such a high priest. Jesus sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven and ministers in the true sanctuary set up by the Lord, not by human hands.

Every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices, so Jesus also has something to offer. The writer is not placing Jesus inside the earthly priesthood as one more priest. If He were on earth, He would not serve in that system, where priests offer according to the law.

The earthly priests serve in a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. Moses was warned to make the tabernacle according to the pattern shown on the mountain. The earthly worship was real within its covenant setting, but it pointed beyond itself.

Jesus has received a much more excellent ministry because He mediates a better covenant founded on better promises. The writer's goal is not contempt for the people who served under the first covenant. It is confidence that God has provided something fuller in Christ.

What This Means for Us

Visible religious forms can help us worship, but they are not God Himself. Let practices, buildings, leaders, and traditions point toward Christ without allowing them to become substitutes for Him.

The better covenant rests on God's promises. A family can approach worship with gratitude rather than trying to make a perfect performance strong enough to force God's attention.

Prayer

Jesus, our minister in the true sanctuary, keep our worship centered on You. Thank You for the better covenant and its promises, and help our visible practices point faithfully to Your reality. Amen.
