Hosea 4:1-10
No Truth in the Land
1Hear the word of the LORD, O children of Israel, for the LORD has a case against the people of the land: “There is no truth, no loving devotion, and no knowledge of God in the land!
2Cursing and lying, murder and stealing, and adultery are rampant; one act of bloodshed follows another.
3Therefore the land mourns, and all who dwell in it will waste away with the beasts of the field and the birds of the air; even the fish of the sea disappear.
4But let no man contend; let no man offer reproof; for your people are like those who contend with a priest.
5You will stumble by day, and the prophet will stumble with you by night; so I will destroy your mother—
6My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you as My priests. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children.
7The more they multiplied, the more they sinned against Me; they exchanged their Glory for a thing of disgrace.
8They feed on the sins of My people and set their hearts on iniquity.
9And it shall be like people, like priest. I will punish both of them for their ways and repay them for their deeds.
10They will eat but not be satisfied; they will be promiscuous but not multiply. For they have abandoned the LORD to give themselves

The LORD brings a case against the people of the land. The charge is not vague. There is no truth, no loving devotion, and no knowledge of God. Instead there is cursing, lying, murder, stealing, and adultery, with one act of bloodshed following another.
Because the people have broken faith with God and with one another, the land mourns. People and animals waste away, and even the fish of the sea disappear. Hosea refuses to separate worship from the created world. When a community's greed and violence become normal, the damage does not stay inside private hearts.
The LORD tells no one to contend or offer reproof because the people are like those who contend with a priest. Leaders who should teach the truth have become part of the resistance. The prophet and the people stumble together, and the LORD says He will destroy their mother, a picture of the whole community that has raised them.
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” is not praise for collecting information. The following lines explain the lack. They rejected knowledge, forgot the law of their God, and multiplied sin as they multiplied in number. The priests fed on the people's sin and set their hearts on iniquity, so spiritual leadership became a way to profit from the very wrong it should have confronted.
The verdict is “like people, like priest.” Leaders and people will both answer for their ways. The people may eat but not be satisfied and pursue sexual sin but not find life in it. The ending returns to the root: they have abandoned the LORD. Their lack of understanding is moral and relational, not merely intellectual.

Ask whether the faith your household talks about can be seen in the way it handles money, conflict, sex, power, and the vulnerable. If the answer exposes a gap, begin with confession and one changed practice.
Prayer
Holy God, give us knowledge that becomes truth and loving devotion. Expose the ways our worship can hide harm, hold leaders and people accountable, and teach us to repair what our sin has damaged. Amen.
