Hosea 5:1-7
They Do Not Know the LORD
1“Hear this, O priests! Take heed, O house of Israel! Give ear, O royal house! For this judgment is against you because you have been a snare at Mizpah, a net spread out on Tabor.
2The rebels are deep in slaughter; but I will chastise them all.
3I know all about Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from Me. For now, O Ephraim, you have turned to prostitution; Israel is defiled.
4Their deeds do not permit them to return to their God, for a spirit of prostitution is within them, and they do not know the LORD.
5Israel’s arrogance testifies against them; Israel and Ephraim stumble in their iniquity; even Judah stumbles with them.
6They go with their flocks and herds to seek the LORD, but they do not find Him; He has withdrawn Himself from them.
7They have been unfaithful to the LORD; for they have borne illegitimate children. Now the New Moon will devour them along with their land.

The LORD addresses priests, Israel, and the royal house together. No group can say that the accusation belongs to someone else. They have become a snare at Mizpah and a net spread out on Tabor, places that should not have been used to trap the people.
The rebels are deep in slaughter, and the LORD says He will chastise them all. He knows Ephraim completely; Israel is not hidden from Him. The people may conceal their motives from one another, but they cannot hide the direction of their lives from God.
Their deeds do not permit them to return because a spirit of prostitution is within them and they do not know the LORD. This is not a claim that repentance has become impossible for someone who turns honestly to God. It is a diagnosis of a people whose chosen habits have made return unwelcome and whose worship has lost any real knowledge of the One they name.
Arrogance testifies against Israel and Ephraim. Judah stumbles with them. The danger is not limited to one region or one class of leader. Religious activity continues, but when they go with flocks and herds to seek the LORD, they do not find Him. The animals and offerings cannot replace a repentant relationship.
The LORD has withdrawn because the people have been unfaithful and have borne illegitimate children, another image of a community created by rival worship. The New Moon will devour them and their land. The calendar of worship cannot save them from the consequences of their divided hearts.

Let your household ask what worship is producing. Is it greater truth, mercy, and humility? If not, do not hide behind more activity. Name the wrong and return to the God you have been avoiding.
Prayer
God who sees all things, keep our worship from becoming a cover for arrogance or harm. Give us repentance that reaches our habits, our leadership, and our treatment of one another. Amen.
