Dragged Away by Desire

12Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.
13When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone.
14But each one is tempted when by his own evil desires he is lured away and enticed.
15Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

James promises blessing to the person who perseveres under trial. After standing the test, that person will receive the crown of life God has promised to those who love Him. Endurance looks toward God's gift of life, not merely the end of present discomfort.
James then addresses temptation. No one should blame God for drawing them into evil. God cannot be tempted by evil and does not tempt anyone. Trials may test our faith, but God's character gives us no reason to accuse Him of seeking our downfall into sin.
The temptation James describes works through our own evil desires. We are drawn toward something we want, and that desire gives birth to sin. Sin, when fully grown, brings death. The picture makes sin's seriousness plain: what attracts us can lead toward destruction.
These verses call for both confidence and honesty. God promises life to those who love Him; He is not the source of our evil desires. We must take responsibility for those desires and resist the sin toward which they pull us. The promise of life gives perseverance a greater hope than the pleasure temptation offers.
