17Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, with whom there is no change or shifting shadow.
18He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we would be a kind of firstfruits of His creation.

James has warned against blaming God for temptation. Now he tells his beloved brothers not to be deceived: every good and perfect gift comes from God. Evil desire leads toward death, but the Father gives what is good.
He is the Father of the heavenly lights, the Creator of the lights above us. Yet unlike changing light and shifting shadow, He does not change. His goodness is not unreliable. The God we approach in hardship is the same generous Father from whom we receive good gifts.
James gives a particular example of that goodness: God chose to give His people birth through the word of truth. New life begins with God's gracious will and comes through His true word. Believers owe their life with Him to His action, not to their own ability to make themselves new.
He calls them a kind of firstfruits of His creation. Firstfruits are the first portion of a harvest set apart for God. The image gives these believers a place within His larger purpose: they belong to Him as people made new. Gratitude for everyday gifts should lead us also to thank Him for this life He has given.
