26If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not bridle his tongue, he deceives his heart and his religion is worthless.
27Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Someone may consider himself religious while refusing to control his tongue. James calls that self-deception and says the person's religion is worthless. What we say about devotion to God cannot excuse speech that harms others.
He then describes religion that is pure before God our Father: caring for orphans and widows in their distress and keeping free from the world's pollution. Both practical compassion and personal holiness belong in the life that honors God.
Orphans and widows are named as people whose need must receive active attention. Concern that never reaches them is not the care James describes. God Himself defends the fatherless and widows, as the law and Psalms teach. His people should reflect that concern.
At the same time, helping others does not give us permission to cherish sin. Care for vulnerable people and resistance to evil must grow together. James gives a searching test of religious life: a governed tongue, help that reaches people in distress and conduct kept from the world's corruption. These are concrete ways in which devotion to our Father becomes visible.
