Facing the Mirror

22Be doers of the word, and not hearers only. Otherwise, you are deceiving yourselves.
23For anyone who hears the word but does not carry it out is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror,
24and after observing himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.
25But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom, and continues to do so—not being a forgetful hearer, but an effective doer—he will be blessed in what he does.

James tells his readers to act on God's word. Hearing without doing can deceive us: we may mistake familiarity with the truth for a faithful response to it.
He pictures someone looking at his face in a mirror, walking away and immediately forgetting what he saw. The look has made no lasting difference. In the same way, a person can hear God's instruction and leave it behind without allowing it to govern a decision or change a sinful practice.
The other person looks intently into the perfect law of freedom and continues in it. This person both attends to the word and acts on it. The difference is not a brief burst of enthusiasm but an ongoing response of obedience.
James calls God's law a law of freedom. His good instruction directs His people away from sin's deception and into the life He desires. Obedience does not compete with receiving His saving word; it is the response James asks of those who receive it. He promises blessing to the person who puts that word into practice. The goal of hearing is a life in which God's truth is remembered and obeyed.
