Facing the Mirror

James turns straight to what a person does with the word. The word is meant to be acted on. What a person actually does once it has been heard is the whole concern of these verses, and James raises it at once, before anything else. Be doers of the word, he tells them, and not hearers only, or you are deceiving yourselves. The danger he names is not disobedience exactly. The danger is self-deception. A person who hears good teaching and feels moved by it can walk away sure they are fine when nothing in their life has actually changed. James says that feeling is a lie you tell yourself. Then he gives a picture for it, and the picture is almost funny.

For anyone who hears the word but does not carry it out is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror, and after observing himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

A man looks in a mirror, sees his own face, turns around, and a moment later he could not tell you what he saw. The mirror did its job. It showed him exactly what was there. He did nothing about it and forgot it at once. That is the hearer who is only a hearer. The word showed him something true about himself, and rather than act on what he had just seen, he turned and went on exactly as he had before.

But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom, and continues to do so—not being a forgetful hearer, but an effective doer—he will be blessed in what he does.

The contrast is not between hearing and not hearing. Both of the men do look. The difference is that the second one keeps looking, stays with it, and lets what he sees change what he does. James calls the word a law of freedom, which is a strange pairing until you notice that a mirror you act on is the opposite of a trap. It frees you from walking around with something wrong you never fixed. And the blessing is not promised for the looking or the knowing. It is promised in the doing, blessed in what he does, which is exactly where the hearer who forgets never arrives.
